The Editing Process + An Engagement Preview

Before I share with you a cute preview of Chris & Priscilla’s portraits, I wanted to answer a question that may go through the heads of potential clients & those in search of getting their portraits taken!

What kind of things do you do to edit your portraits, and why does it take a while before I receive them?

Generally, a photographer’s editing time can vary from 3-6 weeks for portraits, some may take a shorter time, and some can take a little longer. Each photographer has a different style and time of post production. Take note that how I answer and the length it takes is specific to me as a photographer! :)

I take roughly 3-6 weeks to edit portraits (weddings can take a little longer), depending on my work load and the portrait packages my clients desire. For headshots, it may take a shorter period of time as well. Given this range of time, I assure you, I do my best to produce the photos as quickly as I can without losing the integrity of my work.

Editing and processing can mean a couple things. As photographers, we strive to photograph our subjects as perfectly as we can–meaning we try to make sure that in camera our photos are as close to being finished as possible with the perfect lighting, focus, composition, etc. The closer our photographs are to being “perfect” in our eyes on camera, the less work we have to do in our post-production! After we upload and sort through all the images we create, we go through a process called culling, where we find the best of the best and set them aside to edit in detail (We don’t edit photos where your eyes are half open, or action photos that look awkward as you move into poses to help save time!)!

After we cull our photos, we go through and make sure the photos are perfect–the lighting, the crop, the tilt of the photo, etc. I personally also like to go through and edit distracting stray hairs and help touch up faces to get rid of some unwanted acne, etc. But I keep things looking as natural as I can! :)

You may be asking in your head, oh! Do you edit them extremely? Like getting rid of unwanted braces, or help with slimming things down? I personally don’t do that with my packages, but if someone were really insecure about something in their photos, as other photographers do, I can work on things with an extra service fee since it’s more time than I’d usually work on! Plus, being a natural light photographer, and someone that prefers to keep things as natural as possible, I love to make sure my clients look as beautiful as they truly do in real life–not like someone else! ;)

For myself, once I finish going through the photos once, doing detailed edits, I go through a second time and make sure I didn’t miss anything. Then I make sure there’s a consistency in my lighting and coloring before I do my final export!

Shortly after I export them, I send them to my clients to see them and enjoy them for themselves! :)
